How Neuroimaging works
نویسنده
چکیده
Before Neuroimaging came along most information from the brain was gathered by destructive techniques, like vivisection. The problem with this was that you either had to rely on animals or use dead humans. So it was nearly impossible to study topics like brain development or how external influences take effect on the brain. Neuroimaging changed that and now allows us to conduct experiments on humans without inflicting stress, pain or injuries and at the same time to get a unique insight into the workings of the human mind.

Recent advances in functional neuroimaging analysis for cognitive neuroscience
Functional magnetic resonance imaging and electro-/magneto-encephalography are some of the main neuroimaging technologies used by cognitive neuroscientists to study how the brain works. However, the methods for analysing the rich spatial and temporal data they provide are constantly evolving, and these new methods in turn allow new scientific questions to be asked about the brain. In this brief...
متن کاملHow Mind-Body Practice Works—Integration or Separation?
In this Opinion piece, we take mindfulness as an example of mind-body practice to explore the question of how mind-body practice works based on recent neuroimaging evidence. Mind-body practice encompasses a family of complex practices such as mindfulness meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga, andQi Gong. Of these practices, mindfulness meditation has received themost attention in the field of psychology an...
متن کاملNeuroimaging in Headache
Neuroimaging Neuroimaging is divided into three types: diagnostic, functional, and morphometric or structural imaging. As the name implies, the first is used to rule out conditions such as a brain tumor (computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] scans), whereas functional imaging (e.g., positron emission tomography or functional MRI) is used to investigate how the brain works in ...
متن کاملInsights into the Brain: Neuroimaging of Brain Development and Maturation
The study of how the human brain develops has always been a challenge and an interest to the scientific community. In recent years, new evidence has suggested that many neuropsychiatric disorders may originate from aberrations early in development. This discovery necessitates the application of methodologies that make possible the investigation of human brain development in vivo and across the ...
متن کاملVisualization of Nonlinear Classification Models in Neuroimaging - Signed Sensitivity Maps
Classification models are becoming increasing popular tools in the analysis of neuroimaging data sets. Besides obtaining good prediction accuracy, a competing goal is to interpret how the classifier works. From a neuroscientific perspective, we are interested in the brain pattern reflecting the underlying neural encoding of an experiment defining multiple brain states. In this relation there is...
